SSC Joins Hands for a Healthier Siquijor Through Alang sa Katawhan Medical Mission
“Sympathy is no substitute for action.” True to these words, locals from all walks of life in Siquijor came together for the Alang sa Katawhan Medical Mission held on August 7–9, 2025, at the Siquijor State College Covered Court.
This three-day initiative was organized by SK North Poblacion in partnership with Cornerstone Community Baptist Church, BLGU–North Poblacion, the Office of Board Member Brylle Deeiah Quio, IPHO–Siquijor Provincial Hospital, the Provincial Government of Siquijor under the administration of Gov. Jake Vincent S. Villa, and Siquijor State College, led by SUC President II Dr. Steven J. Sumaylo, together with VP for PRIME Dr. Roel Taroc , Mrs. Philna S. Palongpalong, Director of Extension Services and Mrs. Peachy T. Baquilta, Assistant Director of Extension Services.
The medical mission offered a wide range of free healthcare services, including general medical consultations and check-ups (adult and pediatric), ophthalmology services (eye examinations and provision of reading glasses), dentistry (tooth extractions and distribution of hygiene kits), minor surgeries (such as circumcision), and health education and wellness sessions.
“I’m really grateful for the ophthalmology services I received, as I’ve been having some vision problems. I had cataract surgery two years ago, so this check-up means a lot to me. For me, this is truly a wonderful program from the government, especially for us senior citizens,” shared Mr. Phil Malolot, a resident of North Poblacion, Larena, Siquijor.
A total of 573 beneficiaries received heartfelt care during the three-day mission: 241 in ophthalmology, 168 in general medical consultations, 136 in dental care, 26 in pediatric care, and 2 surgical cases.
In a significant highlight of the event, Siquijor State College and mission partners formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), solidifying their commitment to sustained collaboration in delivering accessible healthcare and community development programs for the people of Siquijor. This agreement marks a strengthened alliance among local government units, academic institutions, faith-based organizations, and health agencies in serving the community beyond the mission dates.
Hon. Mamhot expressed his gratitude: “This is just the beginning for more successful missions. Hopefully, we will be able to reach out to all who are in need of immediate medical attention in Siquijor, especially our very own Barangay North Poblacion. But for now, we celebrate and reflect on the harvests we reaped, a good reminder that this is all for community work and youth service.”
The Alang sa Katawhan Medical Mission proved how much can be achieved when the community unites for a common cause. With Siquijor State College at the heart of this effort, the three-day event brought essential healthcare services to those in need and showcased the true spirit of service in Siquijor.
True to its mission of service, SSC continues to forge partnerships for the betterment of the community. As a recognized Outstanding Extension Awardee by CHED–NIR, the institution remains steadfast in flourishing as a beacon of hope, compassion, and progress—proving that when education extends its hands beyond the classroom, lives are transformed.
