Siquijor State College Maritime Programs Undergo CHED-MARINA Monitoring for Continuous Improvement

With the strong aim of promoting  continuous quality improvement in maritime education, Siquijor State College proudly welcomes the Joint CHED-MARINA Monitoring Visit for the Bachelor of Science in Maritime Transportation (BSMT) and Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering (BSMarE) programs at the SSC Convention Center from October 7–10, 2025.

The Joint CHED-MARINA Monitoring Visit is a joint assessment by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) to ensure that the (BSMT) and (BSMarE) programs of SSC meet the required academic and maritime education standards.

The four-day activity aimed to improve course design, teaching methods, and media delivery. The second day focused on checking facilities, equipment, and the examination system. On the third day, the team reviewed on-board training, student admission and retention, and research and extension activities.

The monitoring team was headed by MARINA Lead Evaluator Engr. Junnard C. Hababag, together with members Ms. Editha V. Jacob, Capt. Leah A. Dumas, and Ms. Antonieta C. Alcover. Representing CHEDRO-NIR was Dr. Sotera C. Cagang, while CHEDCO was represented by Mr. Moises B. Cabreros Jr.

The key officials of the SSC administration, led by MEP Director Dr. Roel D. Taroc and Dean of Maritime Education Mr. Gilbert Sumalpong, together with the CME faculty and staff, formally presented the institution’s program resources.

At the closing of the event, SSC key officials listened to the preliminary findings, recommendations, and proposed corrective actions with their timelines. The visit reaffirms SSC’s strong commitment, under the leadership of SUC President II Dr. Steven J. Sumaylo, to quality maritime education and continuous improvement.
