Siquijor State College Hosts Makerscon 2025, Strengthening Innovation and Collaboration

Siquijor State College successfully hosted Makerscon 2025 at the SSC Convention Hall last December 2–5, 2025. The event gathered fabrication laboratories, students, industry partners, innovators, and fellow makers all over the country. Participants engaged in activities that promoted creativity, technology, and innovation. The opening day acknowledged the presence of Hon. Rene Woo, a dedicated public servant of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan ng Siquijor, who delivered an inspiring message. Partner suppliers—American Technologies, Inc., Omni Fab, and Puzzle Box, also took the stage for the spotlight session.

The induction ceremony served as one of the highlights of the first day as SSC was formally announced as the Network Quality Chairman. Dr. Jerome Manatad, the BISU Innovation Director, led the ceremony alongside MSU-IIT Fablab Manager, Mr. Dexter Ken P. Lopera and SSC Fablab Manager, Ms. Peachy T. Baquilta. They were joined by SUC President II, Dr. Steven J. Sumaylo, who took part in the symbolic turning of the key of responsibilities. The ceremony marked a significant milestone for SSC’s expanding leadership within the Fablab network. It also signaled stronger collaboration among partner institutions.

“Siquijor State College stands at the forefront of research, technology and innovation. Hosting Makerscon 2025 strengthens our mission to cultivate talent, empower communities, and elevate Filipino ingenuity. Through this gathering, we open pathways for collaboration, discovery and the exchange of ideas that can chain industries and uplift lives. May Makerscon 2025 spark bold ideas, faster new connections and ignite creations that move our nation forward.” Dr. Sumaylo warmly expressed his welcome address during the second day of the event.

Moreover, DTI-Siquijor Provincial Office OIC-Director, Ms. Bebelyn T. Borongan emphasized the importance of innovation, entrepreneurship, and community-centered problem-solving during her message of support. Participants were acknowledged afterward and given the opportunity to share insights related to new challenges, community development, and tourism MSME innovation. The afternoon session highlighted the Innovation Café, where Fablab Network representatives shared best practices. A series of workshops followed, including “Story and Stitch: Making Symbolic Dolls from Folklore Traditions” led by Mr. Douglas M. Balwit and “Flat-Pack Toy Making” facilitated by Ms. Emmanuelle A. Pangilinan of UP CFA Fablab.

The third day showcased the Eco-Making Contest: Upcycling, Zero-Waste, and Green Fabrication with a grand prize of P20,000  sponsored by Hon. Woo. The contest featured six delegates presenting their innovative products. Each participant highlighted sustainable approaches to design and fabrication. After deliberation, Mr. Dexter Ken P. Lopera of MSU-IIT, Iligan City, emerged as the winner. His work stood out for its creativity, relevance, and environmental impact.

On the fifth day, participants conducted an Extension Visit across selected areas in the province of Siquijor. The visit allowed the group to observe local practices and identify opportunities for innovation and development. It also strengthened connections between the college, partner agencies, and community stakeholders. Organizers expressed appreciation for the collaboration that ensured the event’s success. The entire Makerscon 2025 was made possible through the strong support and efforts of the SSC administration, SSC Fablab led by  Ms. Peachy T. Baquilta and DTI-Siquijor through Ms. Gemma B. Mansera, TIDS, DTI- Siquijor. Indeed, the event stood as a testament to what collective effort, innovation, and shared vision can achieve for the province of Siquijor.
