IEC Campaign on the Philippine Power Sector Engages SSC STEM Students
In line with the National Energy Consciousness Month, the Department of Energy (DOE) successfully conducted an Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) Campaign on the Philippine Power Sector for Siquijor State College – Science Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) students on December 10, 2025. The activity took place at SSC Meeting Hall A, where students gathered to learn more about the country’s energy systems. The program aimed to strengthen students’ understanding of power generation, energy management, and safety. It also provided a venue for academic enrichment aligned with real-world industry updates. The event highlighted the value of energy literacy among young learners in the province.

The program opened with warm welcome remarks from SSC Senior High School Principal Ms. Mary Grace B. Lubguban. She emphasized the importance of equipping students with knowledge that supports national development. Her message encouraged the SSC STEM students to engage actively in discussions and seek clarity on how the power sector impacts communities.
“Through this campaign, we aim to fundamentally transform your understanding of this sector. We are not just here to inform you, we are here to equip and ignite your purpose. We want you to look at the power grid and see the massive opportunities that lie ahead. Beginning right here on this Island until radiating out to the thousands of others. Let us now begin our journey to powerfully, sustainably, and completely illuminate the future of our island.” Dir. Renante M. Sevilla, OIC of the COE Visayas Field Office expressed in his keynote message through virtual highlighting the crucial role of future professionals in shaping a secure and sustainable power sector.

A series of technical discussions enriched the learning experience of the STEM students. Engr. Pete Marvin D. Pañares presented the Introduction to DOE, explaining the agency’s functions and current programs. Engr. Arben S. Vallente followed with Power 101, giving students a clear overview of how electricity is generated and delivered. Engr. Keelin Ed D. Dajao discussed the Siquijor Power Situation and explained the challenges and opportunities of local power distribution. The last session was led by Engr. Renelyn C. Estiya, who talked about LPG Safety and reminded students of essential safety practices at home and in school.
The open forum afterward allowed students to raise questions and clarify topics with the speakers. Their inquiries reflected curiosity and a strong interest in science-based information. The organizers expressed appreciation for the students’ active participation throughout the event. The program ended with the closing remarks of Engr. William M. Cardio, OIC Division Chief of EPIMD. He thanked SSC and the participants for supporting DOE’s initiatives on energy education. Indeed, the event highlighted the strong partnership between SSC and DOE in shaping knowledgeable and responsible young leaders.
